Whitmore Village and Wahiawa Town is the birth place of the Whitmore Project that is located at the Heart of O'ahu between two volcanic mountains, the Ko'olau and Ka'ala mountains. These two locations are unique as both are surrounded by Ag land and Wahiawa Town is surrounded by the only lake existent on the island. As Hawaii's sugar cane and pineapple industry diminish at a rapid pace, Hawai'i has been very reliant on importing most of its food supply from the continental U.S. and foreign countries around the world. The state has committed to solving Hawaii's farming issues by establishing the Agribusiness Development Corporation (ADC). ADC will bring together multiple stakeholders to create a public private partnership for the Whitmore Project.
Solutions That The Whitmore Project Provides:
- Ag-Tech Park to house software and manufacturing companies that develop technology and equipment for farmers;
- Ag land where farmers could obtain long-term leases to invest in their company;
- Rent credits for farmers per agreements with ADC;
- A centralized location to decrease costs, time of transportation, and shipping;
- Retrofitted facilities that comply with the handling, preparation, and storage (Food Safety Regulations);
- Arable land will be converted into active land and achieve scale and diversity of products;
- Co-op opportunities to leverage the high cost of equipment and supplies;
- Workforce housing
- Public-private partnerships
